Cabinet has finally agreed to accept the offer of $60 million for the sale and lease back of the Warrens Office Complex.

That means that contractor Al Barrack should receive his long-overdue, court-awarded compensation in 90 days or sooner.

The sale is to be supervised by the Supreme Court.

Minister of Housing Michael Lashley yesterday confirmed that Government had accepted the $60 million offer from the purchaser.

“I took a paper to Cabinet on Thursday and Cabinet has accepted the offer to settle the matter. We would now have to meet with Mr Barrack’s attorney to finalize the sale,” he told the SUNDAY SUN.

Anyway, it seems that just before an elections is the best and fastest time to get things to happen in this country - legal or illegal. We see the fast-tracking of special legislation to make illegal extensions to NHC units legal, Al Barrack payout, squatters unrestricted access to free NPC water, Cost-U-Less and St John Polyclinic opening, road works in key districts, iPads and flat panel TV giveaways, houses being painted, constituency offices promising "one-stop shop," hiring of persons in statutory corporations and prime minister boasting of not one public sector worker sent home, debushing program intensified, Opposition boycotting Parliament to protest the non-calling of elections, no issues with start of sugar harvest season, road tennis finals beamed directly into your homes with MPs well-positioned at every camera angle, and once busy and always-in-a-hurry politicians now have time to stop and talk at length with ordinary folk.... Did I forget anything?

Even Sir Roy trying islandwide strike gamesmanship to force LIME to rescind letters and reinstate severed employees before the elections bell is rung.

I am still unsure what Mary Redman is seeking to achieve at this time, but we can be confident she has a few tricks of her own up her sleeve.

This is a great time to be a Bajan. Love it. God bless this little island!

Posted by Carl Harper 5 months ago: The time-honored tradition in holding elections before the end of the five-year term is what is of concern here.

PM Stuart may well be within his right to call elections on or before the first sitting of the new Parliament if he chooses. As he said, the people elected him for five years and the Party intends to serve its term.

However, taking that position adds no value to the DLP or enhances its chances at the polls. In fact, it speaks more of a government not satisfied with its own performance or stewardship and is therefore using the opportunity to spend every single day in Office.

On the other hand, if the prime minister refuses to hold elections by February 12, he will attract the ire of the electorate in a manner never before seen in Barbados. Furthermore, it will give the Opposition much ammunition in which to rile up people craving to exercise their democratic freedom.

Stuart is a student of history and law and, though backed into a corner now, will observe the law and a sacred event on the Christian calendar - Lent. Remember he announced the date of the St John by-election on the very last day when there was no pressure ln him to do otherwise.

I can see no reason at this time why the prime minister would want to risk entering the period beyond February 12 if there are no extenuating circumstances - civil unrest, natural disaster etc - that would necessitate him taking the 90-day option.

Hence I expect Stuart to dissolve Parliament and announce the date of elections around the birthday of his protegé, Errol Barrow, for a poll date on the second Tuesday in February.

Stuart is therefore banking heavily on the month of love and the female vote to see him over the top. His only concern should be that the color red features prominently during that month.

'Sell and lease back' - I suppose that leasing back thing will be more pain in the taxpayers pockets for a long time, that's if Barrack legal eagles agree.
