The price tag for the visit by the Earl and Countess of Wessex now stands at $800 000.
That figure includes the cost of repairs to Government House, the sprucing up of Parliament, Prince Cave Hall and Ilaro Court as well as the debushing and resurfacing of roads.
Coordinator of the two-day visit, Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo gave the figure yesterday, a week after Government got approval for more than $530 000 for the state visit which is part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
Last week Prime Minister Freundel Stuart told the House of Assembly that $254 445 was needed to pay for the activities being coordinated by the Cabinet Office, including two state functions, while Minister of Transport and Works John Boyce explained that $276 198 was being spent on renovating Government House to prepare for the Royal visit.

I wish they could tour the whole Island, then a lot of sprucing up would have to be done in lots of areas. It’s time the Royals come down to earth now.

Comment LinkRoads all over this country are in disrepair and overgrown by jungle-bus stops are hidden in greenery-children compete with weeds as they skirt the edges of the roads on their way to school.
Bags of bush litter our roads after the cleaning crews have left.
So exactly how much was spent on what roads?

Comment LinkHaving to incur such expense to help the Queen celebration her Diamond Jubilee was total nonsense in and of itself. Now to see that government has exceeded the approved amount by over 50% in one week’s time is completely outrageous! What unexpected costs, material price increases, etc. could have occurred in such short time? Or is this just another example of incompetent planning, budgeting, and the like?

Comment LinkIt is interesting to see how money appears for certain things and for certain people. If government can not stay within budget with all of the resources they have to hand, just imagine the every day person with limited resources trying to stay within his/her own budget. All the roads within Barbados needs to be either repaired and/or maintain. These repairs should be on going through out the year as an upkeep so that you are ahead of the game not behind. Like with anything else you don’t wait for the house to fall down then to say it needs a paint job. Government get your self together and stay within the money/budget that you have. We all have to do it and so should you as well.

Comment LinkWell we can exhale now, because by now it should be quite apparent which areas the Royals won’t be visiting or passing by! Because we held our breath, hoping against hope that finally, maybe we’d get relief from the roads in our districts which are more pothole than road and frankly are little more than glorified cart roads. That maybe we’d finally get a streetlight or two. That maybe we’d finally get the place debushed. Maybe with the next royal visit!!?
