Hero hurt he couldn’t save the six
Alvin Babb: haunted by the screams of the women who perished in the Tudor Street blaze last Friday night.
Sun, September 05, 2010 - 12:30 AM
“I CAN STILL HEAR THOSE SCREAMS!” says Alvin Babb.
The popular City vendor, who tried feverishly to rescue the six young women who were trapped inside the Campus Trendz store in Tudor Street, still has vivid images in his head of Friday night’s ordeal.
Babb, affectionately known as “Tall Man”, and two others made many attempts to get inside the burning building after learning that people were trapped inside.
He said it was the constant screams from the victims that got his adrenaline pumping. But his efforts were in vain and that was when he started shouting and begging for help but none came.
Speaking from close to the scene of the fire, Babb recalled the incident to the Sunday Sun.
He said he was liming with a friend at the rear of a building close by when they saw two men wearing masks run by. That was when he sprang into action.
“The two men ran and pass the block behind there,” he said, pointing. “And when my partner made a grabble at one, the other one pulled a sword, and I said to my friend, let we go round the front and see what happened.
“And then me, my friend and Short Man tried to pull a few things out of the doorway and we could not get in because the smoke just kept pushing us out. So that is when we went up on the roof of the yellow building,” he said sadly.
Babb said he and the two other men jumped from roof to roof until they were atop the building that was ablaze. He said after ripping through the permaclad and plywood roofing with his bare hands, he came face to face with concrete.
“I hear them people screaming till they can’t scream no more . . . people lives gone . . . only if we had a axe or peck. That is all we did want, you know.
“When we done pull up the permaclad and the plywood, it was pure concrete. If I was in the hospital with a few burns but saved those people, I would have felt much better.
“All people telling me I try and do a good job; that don’t mean nothing to me right now. The more they tell me that, the more that hurt me. We could try . . . and six people dead? That is not a try, that is a fail,” he said sadly.
“We didn’t have any tools. You know what it is, being on top of a burning building and can’t help? You know what it is hearing people screaming and you can’t reach them?
“I tell you, I burst up all my leg trying to get the AC unit kicked out when I hear the women screaming but we couldn’t get in there.
“We tried to bore a hole in the back and when we done boring one side, there was a set of soft stone behind it, and that time chemicals burning from inside the pharmacy and pushing it back out.”
The Goodland, St Michael resident said after trying to gain entry through the sole entrance/exit, the roof and the back of the building proved futile, he was then forced to try entering from boring holes in the building.
“It was bare trap, you know. We even tried to bore a hole through a set of bricks and turn round and butt on some soft stone and it wasn’t moving. I even went in the store and pull out a fireman. If only, boy,” recalled Babb.
Legs swollen
“We never had any tools, we only used we hands. Look, all my hands hurting me, my lungs, and my legs swell and my fingers sore. I ain’t even went to the doctor yet.
“I even tek off Fat Man shirt and went back in there by myself. I didn’t even know smoke could roll. It was so thick and high off the ground.”
Although Babb is today considered a hero by many for his courageous efforts, he insisted that he was not.
“I can still hear those screams, you know. I couldn’t even sleep last night and this morning somebody tell me I did a good job. I could do a good job and hurting?
“I prefer right now to be lying down in the hospital with burns pon me, even if I could have gotten out two of them people.
“You know what it is like hearing people screaming for their lives? I hear one body screaming and can’t reach them . . . screaming for three minutes . . . three minutes.
“I can’t go to sleep, I can’t go to sleep. I don’t like to fail, you know, and the worst [thing is that when I failed] people dead, you know,” said Babb as tears flowed down his cheeks.
“I don’t want to hear that!” he snapped as one man told him that he was a hero to have tried.
Babb insisted that the firefighters could have done more in their efforts to save the six lives that were lost.
“I guarantee those men [firefighters] are trained and if they did at least went up the way we went up, then they would be able to get in.
“We do something that none of those firemen did. Once you could get to the AC unit then you would be able to get inside, but we didn’t have any tools.
“The firemen are trained. If them did hear the screams then they would get in. I always believe there is always something you can do. I know there is always something you can do,” cried Babb.

I was asking myself the same question all day, why were the FIREMEN not able to save at least one of those people??? something is very wrong. I watch the firemen in NY fighting fires all the time, the first thing they do is to enter the building and check to see if anyone is inside. I am sure yesterday when the firemen arrive at the scene they knew people were in that building. Why were no lives saved? Alvin you tried your best, don’t be so hard on yourself. Shame on the authorities for now talking about doing more with business places that only have one entrance.

Comment LinkCondolences to the deceased and their families. I also feel so sorry for Mr Babb and the others that tried to help.
Mr Babb WAS incredibly brave and I hope that one day he can get over this. I hope that he gets medical help too. Who knows what chemicals may have been in that smoke.
As to the villains. Words cannot express my anger. They must not be allowed to get away with this crime.

Comment LinkIt is good to hear that even tho these evil men stole these womens lives there are still good kind corageous Barbadians like Mr. Babb. It is people like him who will help save Barbados - may God help us catch these evil men soon before they can flee the island or do something like this again. To rob a store is one thing but to do something like this is pure evil and they should never be allowed to see the light of day once they are caught

Comment LinkI really support the efforts of Alvin… What we need to bring to light is the fact that this building was an old bank.. and specially built to make entry extremely hard. Regardless, although this fire was still giving challenges up to 3.00am, The fire Service, Defence Force, Coast gaurd and other responders did not cease until they were finally able to enter the building by bursting holes and removing the persons trapped inside and this must not be overlooked. We are all saddened by this historic tragedy and we wish to join with the families and ask God,s Grace for them now… Brother Alvin you did all you could have and I am sure we are all grateful… God is in control ...

Comment LinkFind these creatures (I can’t call them animals because animals are not capable of such acts).
Therefore they should be treated less than an animal.
They don’t need no prison sentence - they have gone beyond that type of punishment.
Instant death is even too good for them. Because dead people don’t learn lessons. Tortured people do. So torture would be the best punishment until death.
I will keep the families in my prayers and I will channel all my energy to the universe that the capture of these beast is manifested.
All of us need to do this at this time.

Comment LinkMy sympathy to all the families that have lost their loveones. It is very hard to comprehend such sadness… lost of these young lives that didn’t had a chance. Trying to make an honest living & 2 or more tugs came & destroy them. They don’t want to work, just get easy money @ the expence of some innocent people. God best their lives & may God bring comfort to the family. This is a hard pill to swallow.

Comment LinkAlvin, don’t be so hard on yourself, as one of the 1st. responders, you try real hard. you didn’t stand-up & just watch. God best you for that. later if you still having those unpleasant thoughts, maybe you can get some counseling. I’m glad you was there to help out.

Comment Linki am sadden of what has happen in the my country barbados, my condolences to all the families. From now on i believe when some one is looking for a place to set up a business, they have to check all things out, and the fire chief and thoes in the security shoould not ok any buildings unless they pass the security check, example all buildings should have ceiling sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and definetly EXITS , no business place should be allowed to operate with just one door.

Comment LinkThose two COWARDS attacked women. Robbing the store was bad enough but to fire-bombed it knowing full well that the women were still in there was indescribably EVIL.
Unless they have already fled the country, I believe that they will be caught, I certainly hope so.

Comment LinkMr. Babb you did your best. I cannot imagine what it would feel to hear people crying for help and you could not get to them. It must be horrible to still remember, and you will never forget. May God give you peace, may the people who lost their lives rest in peace, may the families find comfort in their memories. We do not understand why God allows these types of things to happen but this is an evil world and may the ones who did this meet their end also. They do not deserve prison.

Comment LinkWhenever I go to Barbados I see Alvin. Even though he is tall a woman will still feel safe walking by him. Alvin is a true gentle giant and he needs to be commended by the government for his actions. Alvin, I pray that one day you will be able to sleep, one day the screams in your head will lessen. If only the murderers are suffering in the same way as you are. Not doubt they are sleeping and eating protected by people who have misplaced loyalty! Alvin you did all you could do! Put youself at peace!

Comment LinkWhy are we blaming the firemen for not doing more to save these six women? Firemen are trained on how to fight fires, they are thought to first assess the situation while reducing any risks to themselves and others, unlike the untrained individual who first instinct when the adrenaline kicks in is to jump right in without first assessing the risks. Under the present cirsumstances then, I believe all that could have been done was done…..... May these six girls rest in peace and my condolensces are extended to their loved ones.

Comment LinkYou have done a great job, the firemen and policemen, need to start doing a more serious job in Barbados and stop dressing for show. Those firemen done too little to save those girls. if they did training for the job, they should show us the training the night of the of the fire.
To the six girls died in the fire. May you rest in peace, but God will bring you justice.

Comment LinkThis sad episode should not be allowed to die without a serious analysis of our readiness to deal with emergencies of this nature. The quality of public response and our building codes are fully exposed.

Comment LinkNo one knows why the firemen did not enter that building at that particular time. Maybe it was a safety issue and people show they true colours by trying to help. However that building unfortunately proved to be unsafe. Where were the fire exits? Those thieves and the owners of that building are equally responsible for the lost of life. Why? If there was an accidental fire and people ran to the back the same tragedy would have happen. Change needs to happen and quick not by bajan standards.

Comment LinkMy condolences to the family and friends of the six young women whose lives ended tragically. Kudos to “Tall-man” for his efforts to try to save the victims . When the miscreants who did this cruel deed are caught and tried , they must be hanged. It is time to legalise the Building Code and implement the Safety and Health Act .

Comment LinkMy condolences go out to the affected families. I also compliment the courageous first responders. Please do not criticise the firemen and the police, especially the firemen. They did their best in the prevailing circumstances. You were not in their shoes. It is very easy to condemn after the fact.

Comment LinkI was not there and so I cannot comment on the firemen. What I can say is, that we have firemen in Barbados who fight fires, but we do not have a rescue team and we need to understand that the firemen did what they are trained to do.
As for Alvin, he is brave fellow and God will surely reward him for his efforts. Those women were in a cage and there were too many obstacles preventing the loss of life.
Anyone who exists in that intense smoke even for 4 mins is gone. 4 mins is all that it takes for your body to be without oxygen. 4 mins is the time it probably took for the firemen to get to the fire in any event. Even Alvin said it was 3 mins.
What would have helped is if the building codes made it easier for anyone to get in.
I am however interested to know about the fireman that Alvin said he pulled out.
