PM on two months’ sick leave

PM on two months’ sick leave Prime Minister David Thompson speaking at a press briefing today. (Picture by Nigel Browne)

By WADE GIBBONS | Thu, July 01, 2010 - 1:16 PM

PRIME MINISTER DAVID THOMPSON will be taking two months leave from his national responsibilities and could be heading for major surgery.

During a national broadcast from Government Headquarters, Thompson said that during the past few weeks he had undergone “observation, tests and medication”.

He added his doctors placed him on a necessary, rigourous, dietary regime that had caused him to lose weight.

“I have not completed my regime of treatment and therefore there is nothing significant to report at this time. Shortly, an evaluation will take place to determine if I need surgery. It may be a complex and serious procedure,” he noted.

Thompson acknowledged he had been operating at a reduced pace and said he did not think it was fair for him to ask Barbados to move at his reduced pace. He said it would be a few weeks before “God willing” he was able to discharge his functions in a manner that was required in the circumstances.

“Accordingly, I am requesting the nation's forbearance as I have decided to take two months leave from my duties as Prime Minister. This time will be spent outside of Barbados,” he indicated.

Thompson said Deputy Prime Minister Freundel Stuart would naturally act as Prime Minister throughout his absence and he was devolving on him the authority to make whatever decisions he deemed necessary “to keep the social and economic ship of state on even keel”.

He expressed confidence in Stuart, noting he had been carrying out the duties of Prime Minister of Barbados on several occasions during the past two years and had performed with distinction. He added

Stuart had lived up to the great expectations Barbados always had of him.

“He certainly has my undisputed confidence and respect and that of the entire Cabinet and the members of the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament,” Thompson stressed.

Again extolling Stuart’s virtues, Thompson said that as Attorney-General he commanded the greatest admiration and reverence of the legal fraternity.

He also paid homage to Barbados’ Public Service, noting it had a reputation for dedication to service “throughout the changing times”.

“I have every reason to believe that, in these circumstances, my absence from this country will have minimal effect on the efficiency and effectiveness of government institutions,” Thompson said.

Describing the situation as one of the most trying periods of his life and a very testing one for his family, Thompson called on Barbadians to rally around the causes for which he had fought throughout his career as a youth leader, lawyer and political leader.

“These causes can be summed up in the simple desire to take Barbados to the next level of development,” he said.

Thompson stated he would be leaving Barbados in a “matter of hours” and eagerly looked forward, with the help of God and Barbadians’ support and prayers, to be returning to his post in the near future.

Everyone, including the Prime Minister is entitled to some level of privacy, therefore, he does not have to state the nature of his illness.  What will it benefit us to have this information.  Someone mentioned that “in their opinion the welfare of this country, in this instance takes presidence to the PM’s privacy”. But I think the main concern now is, will the standard of leadership remain the same or do we have cause for concern in case Mr. Thompson’s health deteriorates thereby causing him to resign or step aside.

Comment by Bajan Princess is in poor taste. The PM is a citizen of Bdos and a human being, at this time,  undivided compassion is required. It is a difficult period for the PM and his family; let the Bajan Princess put aside her pettiness. Now is the call for true Christian love to our sick brother notwithstanding whatever illness confronts him.

Mr Thompson, I wish you the speediest of recoveries from whatever ails you but I have to agree with the above poster, tell the people what is wrong with you. The country needs to know what has befallen its prime minister. Gone are the days of FDR hiding his inability to walk from the public, sickness befalls everyone and is nothing to be ashamed of. I hope that the underlings have the ability to carry out the mandate and the manifesto of the party for the duration of the term of office. Wait I misspoke, the leave of absence is only two months, let us hope it is time enough for Mr Thompson to recuperate and resume the helm of the DLP and the country.

No.. i disagree strongly .. are you his doctor or family member that you need to know whats wrong with him? will it change anything if you knew. Let him and his family have a little privacy, he still has to get surgery so he’s not out of the woods yet, so let him and his family deal with the situation. Elections are not for another two years, by then you shall know if he’s fit to lead or not, and we have Stuart as acting PM so the welfare of this country is in good hands, its not left to rebels. Best wishes to him and his family.

@ BAJAN PRINCESS
The irony here is that as you are stating that the Prime Minister has forfeited his right to privacy concerning his health you are doing so under the anonymity of a tag name.

May the Great Architect Of The Universe let his universal healing light beam on Prime Minister Thompson, may he grant him a full and speedy recovery from whatever ailment that has overtaken him. Mr. Prime Minister be strong, let not thy faith in thy creator falter. He will give you VICTORY over your ailment. May God strengthen your family at this very difficult time. We as a nation will keep you and your family in our prayers. What difference does it make if the Nation knows what is wrong with the Prime Minister? Let the man have his PRIVACY at this very difficult time. The show will go on no matter what.

My prayers and sympathy to Prime Minister Thompson and his family.

I truly believe, we, as Believers of Jesus Christ, should be calling upon Jesus for healing of the Prime Minister, and not critizing, for Jesus loves us all and as the word of God says the things which are impossible with men, are possible with God (Luke 18:27).

This is a time for Mr. Thompson to be calling upon God as Hezekiah did, read Isaiah 38.

The point here surely is what the Prime Minister himself today said - that he and his administration would be honest and transparent in everything they did.

Keeping silent about what is wrong with him when he is Prime Minister of the Country is just not acceptable.

It truly amazes me at some of the things that “educated” people such as CONCERNED and BAJAN PRINCESS will write. As a young person, it really boggles my mind.

I wish the PM all of the best and I, like many people, will be praying for him, that God’s will shall be done and healing restored to his body.

Mr.Thompson, my thoughts & prayers are with you & your family. Take as long as you have to for this process to work & the rest will take care of itself. I hope you are feeling the positiveness, cause a lot of people are interceding on your behalf. You have a good family support system & that always works well in the healing process. Don’t give up, never give up. fight with all your might. Remember Footprints in the Sand? There is somebody greater than you or me. Every little thing is going to be alright.

I wish the Prime Minister all the best. He’s not telling the country what is wrong with him? This is not right. The nation needs to know if it’s leader is in good health and condition to continue his roll and duties as a head of state.

I agree with Bajan Princess 100%. the reason why, if we as a nation is praying for our Prime Minister, when we go before God in Jesus Name. we must be SPECIFIC if it
Cancer etc then we know how to talk to God, for more information on being SPECIFIC when praying

Why all the secrecy about the Prime Minister’s illness why not tell the people of Barbados the nature of the illness this in turn could save the life of fellow Barbadians who would go and seek help.  Other world leaders tell their people the nature of their illness etc.  People do not need full details just what the illness is. This is not a critism just hope the Prime Minister’s adviser would have advised to do above.  However hope the Prime minister has a speedy recovery

I join my prayers with those who are looking to God for a miracle for our Prime Minister. As far as I know the nation has only one Prime Minister at a time, so this is a time to put aside the partisanship and allow the milk of human kindness to flow. It is deeply disturbing to read some of the comments which have been posted, because they are reflective of a mean-spiritedness which is unbecoming of those who have posted them. Whatever has happened to our common humanity ? Are we now so callous that we cannot sympathise with the suffering of a fellow human being, regardless of our political affiliation? I am sure that in due time, the nature and extent of the Prime Minister’s illness will be officially declared; until then, let us pray for him and his family and those who will have to assume the mantle of leadership of the country we all profess to love.

Imagine all these bloggers like sandflies have come out stinging hard on a subject such as this, when daily there is so much that needs addressing and not a squeak from them. The Prime Minister has said that his tests are incomplete and ungoing, so what is there to tell? What has that got to do with offering up a pray for him or wishing him well? Put yourself in his position, would you not disclose when you consider it the right time? We know he is seriously unwell, let us all place him in God’s hands and pray for his healing, and it’s according to God’s will. We have to pray too for our very existence as a Nation.

We are all entitled to privacy including The Prime Minister of Barbados! When The PM sees fit to disclosed the nature of his illness, he will do so when he and his family thinks it’s time to do so. To those who think he should disclose his illness…...Do you know of anyone who would brag to the whole world they have for example, HIV, HERPES or any serious disease?? (a minute few) I don’t think so!! Best wishes to The Prime Minister and his family, and may Our Heavenly Father heal you from what ever ailment you may have. We are all wishing you a speedy recovery!
