If you have heard To The Top and Gimme Good Love, and seen the music video of To The Top, then you would have heard and seen 15-year-old Amelia Ramcoomarsingh at her creative best.
The solo artiste has been singing since age seven and says it’s a natural gift and something that she loves to do.
She goes by the stage name Amelia because she “liked the originality and simplicity of the one tag”.
Over the past few months Amelia has been gearing up for her career in the entertainment industry as a musician, actress and dancer as she takes on the international markets.
Amelia, who moved back home in 2007 after living in Florida with mum Petal Payne, attends Ursuline Convent, where she is juggling her studies with her music. In fact, she is currently fine-tuning her craft as a musician and songwriter by learning to play both the guitar and the piano.
“My mum has been very supportive from day one. She believes that everyone should be able to follow their dreams and live out their passion. She knows that I know that there are advantages and disadvantages when going into the music industry but she will always be there to help me make the right decisions. Education is also very important to me, so my mum was never worried.”
The singer has been working with various producers, such as Antmaestro, Daddy Bubbles, KB Sharp and The Sky Movement.
Amelia dedicates Monday through Thursday to school work and Fridays and Sundays to working in the studio since she is in fifth form and studying for her CXCs.
“This way I have a balance between my music and school.”
Amelia’s music is a fusion of pop and R&B that is heavily influenced by her Caribbean roots. She often gains inspiration from her favourite artistes Rihanna, Beyoncé, Jaicko, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, Bob Marley and Whitney Houston.
“My voice has a bit of rustic tone that would suit most genres,” she said. “Some songs I like to do covers of are Adele’s Someone Like You or Who You Are by Jessie J or most of Beyoncé’s and Rihanna’s songs.”
To The Top was recorded in early January. The track was written by Eden Forrester, daughter of well known Barbadian musician Philip Forrester.
It is a fun, energetic song that talks about teenage girls hanging out with friends on a Friday night and having a great time, imagining the day when they can finally go to a club.
“I have had many positive responses and feedback from the song. There is a video of it on YouTube. It was a very fun video shoot which was done with a lot of my very good friends. Despite it being lots of fun, it was a lot of hard work.
“We started shooting from 6 p.m. and didn’t finish until 7 a.m. the next morning.”
The talented recording artist has quickly learnt that the industry is not only about glitz and glam but hard work, talent, passion, knowledge and discipline.
“The biggest challenge of music is that it is time consuming. One of the negatives so far has been not being able to hang out with my friends as much and missing out on celebrations.”
Amelia is now in the studio working on new music to be released later this year and will also be releasing ongoing documentary-style videos of her musical journey.
“I have recorded quite a few songs but I haven’t decided as yet which ones will be on my first album.
“My plan for the rest of the year is to release another one of my songs called Say Goodbye. This song is actually very special to me since it’s the first song I have ever written. I’ll also be doing lots of covers of some of my favourite songs and also a video of my song Gimme Good Love, which will be on YouTube soon.”
Amelia has also taken great interest in building her brand in the fashion world as she has her own unique style and aspires to own her personal clothing and accessories line.
Amelia’s bubbly personality merged with her beauty, talent and passion for the music industry will no doubt set her on a journey to greatness and success.
“The fame hasn’t got to me which, I think, is thanks to my mum as she has always raised me to be a very well rounded person who sticks to her morals and values.
“When the fame came, there were some changes in some people but, in that way, I learnt who my true friends were. Despite being a recording artiste, like every other teenager I still have chores like cleaning my room or cooking once in a while,” she said laughing, adding she is a girlie girl with pink as her favourite colour.
“I am truly excited about being a recording artiste as this has been a dream of mine since I was little,” said Amelia, who still wants to be a paediatrician.
