Baby caught in the middle

Baby caught in the middle (FP)

Sat, June 30, 2012 - 12:06 AM

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) was this week at the centre of what seems to be a love affair gone sour.

The problem is, the troubled relationship is between two non-nationals and involves their new born.

The SATURDAY SUN understands that a 25-year-old Grenadian national turned up at the QEH this week and gave birth to a child. Afterwards, the woman said she did not want the baby and asked for it to be put up for adoption.

The social services officers at the Martindales Road, St Michael institution were immediately called in to help resolve the matter. (SP)

* Has she paid her QEH bill in full?

* Well...some Bajan parents will get a brand-new baby they'll love and look after
- more than its Grenadian bio-mother.

* WHERE is the father??
Does HE want to give it up for adoption??
Does the child have an identifiable father?
or did this great event happen 'automagically'?

I really hope this is not a trend coming our way and does this child have no father who also have a say in this matter or are we to believe that this is out of spite. This is going to be an interesting matter because of have never heard of it in Barbados happening. The mother is not a native of this country and I this her country have to be informed of this matter and between Governments some investigation be done about this matter before crying for adoption because it's not that simple. Funny how we as adults make decisions on the innocent after carrying a nine month child; regardless of her actions the father deserves to know, something is wrong with this picture.

The baby is entitled to Barbadian citizenship because it was 'born in Barbados after November 30 1966'. What I wonder is if an outsider adopts the baby will they be able to acquire Barbadian citizenship?

Better she said up front that she did not want it than to go and throw it in a pit, or leave it on a beach somewhere. What can I say?

At least it is good that she had/has the welfare of this child at heart, but didn't somebody warn her all along that adoption is not a fly over? The sexual intercourse must have been the easiest part, dear lady, because the consent of the father or dispensing with consent is a very vital part of adoption. Besides the scent of the money must be burning them lawyers noses already 'cause adoptions don't cost a penny anymore.
