BARBADOS WILL HAVE a new Governor General by next week Friday. He is retired High Court judge Justice Elliott Belgrave, who has been acting in the post formerly held by Sir Clifford Husbands for 15 years until last October 31.
Making the official announcement in the House of Assembly yesterday, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of her ministers in Barbados, had been “graciously pleased to approve the appointment of the Honourable Elliott Fitzroy Belgrave as Governor General of Barbados with effect from June 1, 2012”.
Stuart told the prelunch sitting of Parliament that the selection of a Governor General was no easy task and must be guided by a range of factors including personal and professional attributes, a record of service, commitment to country, integrity and dignity. He added that many Barbadians at home and abroad could qualify.
He also informed that the appointment had been delayed as a result of the visit of royal representatives to Barbados in February and other activities here to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. (RJ/TS)
