The Barbados Turf Club (BTC) and its horseman liaison officer Mohommed S. Mohamad have collaborated to stage the second day of the second racing season tomorrow at the historic Garrison Savannah.
The eight-race Mohommed S. Mohamad 45th birthday raceday card gets rolling at 1:30 p.m.
The headlining races are the Mohommed S. Mohamad 45th Birthday Breeders’ Stakes and Trophy, a grade II event for Barbadian-bred three-year-olds over 1 570 metres and the Saleh and Khatija Mohamad Memorial Stakes and Trophy Condition Race for four-year-old and older horses over 2 200 metres.
However, early in the programme, all attention will primarily be focused on the classy and quickest horse in Barbados – Shared Adventure. The H and M’s colt will tackle five opponents, spotting them from as little as 22 to a maximum 30 pounds.
With class and speed being his main attributes, the question would be whether he can defy this top weight of 140 pounds.
Can he lower the track record to below the 1:03.4 mark having matched that twice in his last two runs?
If it is any consolation, only Iamsogroovy (110) and Erados (118) are yet to suffer at the hands of the Boston John-trained phenomenon.
The day’s feature, a grade II event for Barbadian-bred three-year-olds, put together the best of the boys tackling two females, Iguazu and Alina. The latter is the better horse, having performed very creditably against the imported juveniles.
They will carry 121 pounds, while the colts and geldings will shoulder 126 pounds, respectively.
Janak’s Gold, should be looking to rebound from a dsappointing ride last time, while Cabin Boy will want to stake his claim for the remainder of the classics with a gutsy effort.
Flying South is yet to muster a place effort at the trip in his three attempts – something he needs to rectify, especially with the classics in full swing.
Sirius Black ran encouragingly in his lone effort when finishing second albeit against much softer company.
Knight Rider rebounded from two poor efforts at this trip against the big guns with a runaway sprint victory against minor company. The real interest in the race is on the outside drawn Khartoum and whether he takes to going around the paddock bend.
It’s no secret that the majority of his previous attempts compare favourably to that of a horror movie. For this race, his connections have added specially fitted blinkers in an effort to correct this problem once and for all.
One of the best races on the programme is the Aysha Mohamad Trophy Handicap over 1 570 metres.
Cinnamon Jane (128) is yet to run a bad race in her last three starts and looks the one to beat.
Captain Sully (125) has to make the most of the inside post by going for the lead. It, however, won’t come without a fight as Local Speed (114) is expected to challenge for that position.
