Blackett: No slight to Gabby

Blackett: No slight to Gabby Mighty Gabby

Wed, August 25, 2010 - 12:00 AM

ANTHONY “GABBY” CARTER’S omission from a cultural team to the World Expo in China is no slight on the 2010 calypso monarch, says Minister of Culture Steve Blackett.

That assurance was given yesterday after revelations that Gabby was not among the cultural contingent flying out of Barbados to China for the ongoing May 1 - October 31 event. Included in the party were nine-time calypso monarch Red Plastic Bag, two-time monarch Adrian Clarke and this year’s Party Monarch winner Blood.

Gabby defeated the trio on the way to capturing his eighth calypso crown in the prestigious Pic-O-De-Crop Finals at Kensington Oval on July 31.

Also in the contingent are chief executive officer of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), Dr Donna Hunte-Cox, Dorsie Boyce, veteran road tennis player and NCF board member Philip

Garner, NCF staffer Stacia Bryan and Mikey, who took second and third positions in the Sweet Soca and Party Monarch competitions, respectively.

Not on original list

Blackett told the DAILY NATION that the entertainment contingent for China had been determined before the completion of the Crop-Over competition. He said Gabby had not been on the original list of those considered for the expo. He noted, however, that the veteran calypsonian would be representing Barbados at Labour Day celebrations in New York.

Efforts to reach Gabby for comment yesterday were unsuccessful.

The Expo is being staged on both banks of the Huangpu River in the city of Shanghai, and more than 190 countries and 50 organisations are slated to participate. Between 70 and 100 million people are expected to visit the expo which has been mooted as the biggest in history.

Blackett said the massive event provided an ideal opportunity for countries to expose several aspects of their culture and Barbados had decided to send a team. He explained that it was primarily a Ministry of Tourism initiative.

Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy was part of an official delegation that visited the Expo last month to push Barbados as a tourism destination.

China has granted Barbados the designation of Approved Destination Status (ADS), which affords Chinese citizens the opportunity to visit the island under self-funded tourist travel for leisure.

Mr. Blackett, do you really feel that we are that stupid to believe that you all have not slighted our Calypso King? Never have there been a cultural tour, after crop over to an international event without the reigning monarch.
This is a political hit on Gabby. It is people such as you, that have been killing Barbadian artistes for all those years. This is tantamount to what was done to Elombe Mottley, when he was NFC Chairman. Remember? That is why Bajan artistes should stay away from you and the NCF.

Yes Mr. Blackett, we believe you. But we know that your fingers were crossed while you were speaking. Get real. Not all of us are so politically naive not to understand what is happening. The DLP might have new leaders but the culture remains the same and it will never be changed by those inside the parties. It must be the people on the outside who force the DLP to change. Make them a one term government and if the BLP do not learn from that then you do the same to them. But change must come. If Barbadians believe and wanted Gabby to go to China, then they could make it happen. Mr. Blackett works for you, you dont work for him.

GABBY IS & WILL ALWAYS BE A GREAT AMBASSADOR FOR BARBADOS
HE KNOWS HOW TO PURPORT HIMSELF IN INTERNATIONAL ARENAS.
THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HOW BLACK PEOPLE WORK TO BRING ABOUT THE DOWNFALL OF EACH OTHER.
WHY CAN'T WE COME TOGETHER, HAVE A DISAGREEMENT, THEN BEG TO DIFFER WITHOUT DESTROYING EACH OTHER

I have read a note about this unfortunate incident on Facebook and the artists tell a completely different story.

Adonijah also has a very revealing article in another section of the Press.

Why is it that this Government that professed to be open and for all Bajans is treating people who deserve better like this.

I was very sceptical about the claims of victimisation from the Opposition when they first came to office, but I am seeing it more and more in other areas of life in Barbados.

Don't worry people the longest day has an end and in their case a ballot box attached.

If Mr. Blackett wants to delude himself that a place could not be found for Gabby is not a "slight," he can do so. I do not believe it. It is incomprehensible how places were found for Red Plastic Bag and Adrian Clarke(all past monarchs) but none for the current monarch. The stench is floating across the Caribbean sea. One thing Mr. Blackett seems good at is his inability to tell a convincing lie. Boo Hoo.

I like Gabby but it could just be that from a Chinese cultural perspective Gabby just isn't an enough drawing force to get Chinese tourists to Barbados.
