Bobby Brown took to the stage just hours after Whitney Houston's death, amid reports that the late singer's ex-husband was devastated by the news of her passing.

Brown was scheduled to perform in Mississippi as part of New Edition. The controversial R&B star was said to be in "crying fits" over the news, and broke down shortly after taking the stage.

"First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” he said to the crowd according to the AP (via Entertainment Weekly). "Second, I would like to say, 'I love you Whitney.' The hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage."

In another mini-tribute during an intermission in the show, Houston's 1985 single "You Give Good Love" blared over the speakers.

Brown and Houston were married for 14 years, and the relationship's turbulent moments played themselves out in the public eye. Brown  was charged with misdeamor battery after a 2003 incident. Houston appeared in court with a bruise on her neck but stayed by Brown's side.

In a later interview with Oprah, Houston described Brown as her "drug," explaining that "whatever we did, we did it together." (Brown has often been portrayed as a corrupting influence on Houston, who fought a long battle with substance abuse).

Houston's self-titled debut album, released in 1985, sold 25 million copies worldwide. In total, she released seven albums and three film soundtracks; a winner of six Grammys, Houston sold over 200 million albums and singles worldwide. She earned 30 Billboard Awards, 22 American Music Awards and two Emmy Awards.

Video of her last performance has appeared online. Houston sang "Yes, Jesus Loves Me" with Kelly Price just one day before she was found unresponsive in a hotel room at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

A number of media figures, celebrities and musicians have paid tribute thus far.

Herein lies the tale of Whitney’s fall from grace, and maybe her premature death.Bobby was her “drug” alright.

@ Mike Lindo; That is how he is portrayed , but I don’t know if it is quite accurate.  Go on the net and read again.  Although he might have been some sort of enabler, she used the hard stuff before meeting him. But she also had a mind of her own,  a supportive mother and a daughter to set an example for. One has got also to look at other forces that keep entertainers drugged up to make money off of them.
Hopefully her soul will find peace.
What boggles my mind is that our early really bad addicts in Barbados somehow were able to get off and return to meaningful lives. Today that does not happen anymore. Is the drug more enhanced, is the human body more frail, is rehab failing, because it is so overwhelmed or is it something else?

The independent variable is drugs the dependent variable is Whitney’s downfall and the intervening variable is Bobby Brown. It was the drugs she choose to take that led to her downfall.

As we remember the great talent that was Whitney Houston, we must resist the urge to go along with the view of the mainstream press that Bobby Brown was the sole corrupting influence in Whitney’s life. We must remember that Whitney was several years older than Bobby and that she often times gave as good as she got in that relationship. I look at both of them as two components in a poisonous cocktail; on there own they might be relatively harmless, but together they were toxic for each other. I think that on some level, they both truly cared for each other, but on the whole they were very bad for each other. Neither possessed the strength to check the others worse tendencies or their own. I have heard from many people over the years that attested to Whitney not being the wholesome, innocent, and impressionable person her carefully crafted media image portrayed. We all knew of Bobby’s exploits but did not hear about Whitney’s until after the marriage started to go sour. The only truly blameless and innocent party in this tragic tale is their daughter Bobbi Christina, who had to grow up witnessing it all. Whitney’s father tried to rescue Bobbi by attempting to take custody of Bobbi, but his efforts were thwarted in court by Whitney’s high-priced lawyers. Her dad died soon after. I believe he saw what his daughter had become and it broke his heart. Let us remember Whitney for the great talent that she was, but let her life be a cautionary tale about some of the corrupting influences in the entertainment industry. Let us also refrain from blaming Bobby for it all as I believe he is just as much a victim of the same corrupting influences. Whitney helped to do this to herself. Let us pray that the daughter can find some peace and healing in this troubling time and go on to become a healthy and well adjusted young lady.
