Hanging death linked to City tragedy

Hanging death linked to City tragedy Aldo Babb whose body was discovered hanging in a house at Chalky Mount, St Andrew.

Wed, September 08, 2010 - 12:02 AM

BARBADOS Red Cross volunteer Aldo Babb, who assisted in removing the bodies of victims of the Campus Trendz fire, was found hanging last Monday in the one-room plywood building where he slept, a stone’s throw away from his girlfriend’s family home at Chalky Mount, in St Andrew.

Babb, 39, was a full-time employee in the laundry of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Reports indicated that investigations were under way into Babb’s involvement with the removal of the body of Shanna Griffith, 18, from the crime scene where she and five others perished last Friday night in Tudor Street, The City.

Authorities reportedly want to find out who gave instructions to remove the body, which was later left uncovered on a stretcher in the hallway at the Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department.

There have also been questions about Babb, who was on duty at the National Stadium with the Red Cross, being asked to assist with the body’s removal.

Yesterday, a relative who declined to give her name, said Babb’s girlfriend Sandy Alleyne discovered his body hanging from a rafter soon after returning home from the first day on a new job in the canteen of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.

That relative told the Midweek Nation: “Apparently, all the time he was saying he was not feeling well. He was having chest problems. He stayed home from work yesterday, but they thought he was inside just resting.

When [Sandy] went down there to check on him, she saw him and she ran out. We just heard her screaming and calling for somebody to come.”

Ermine Vaughn, mother of Babb’s girlfriend, was still in a state of disbelief when the Midweek Nation team visited her home yesterday.

Dampened mood

The tragic incident dampened what promised to be a happy school term start for Babb’s 13-year-old son; for his daughter Deandre Greenidge, who was looking forward to her first day of study in hospitality services; and for stepson Shammar Alleyne, who was due to begin an apprenticeship programme yesterday.

Babb was also the father of two teenaged daughters.

Standing in the room where the suicide was allegedly committed, a visibly distraught Shammar said: “I feel real terrible knowing that he and my mother had big dreams.

“They were planning to get married before the year done . . . knowing that my little brother is still young; and right now he is not talking to anybody.

“He was a good man and I sorry he [Babb] did this to us at this time. It got my mother hurt.”

Neither Babb’s mother nor his girlfriend was available for comment. (TS/GC)

In reading this article, I somehow seem bewildered about his unfortunate actions.
There is something weird about what has taken place and what he did the night of this tragedy.
It just does not add up.

You see why the authorties have to find the killers. They are causing havoc on people’s lives. This is so sad. My sympathy goes out to the Babb family. We like to place blame and point fingers but according to this article I have alot of questions about paragraphs 4 & 5. I know the hospital is short of staff but nobody didn’t see her to cover her over…how about the person that put her there. If nothing else, besides Aldo’s untimely death, not covering Shanna body made me nauseated. Come on people. Another thing, when there is an emergency outside in the field, don’t the ER prepare for the unexpected? Everything is so sad.

It’s a selfish act. He was not thinking about the people he left behind, he went for the cowardly way out. Anyone who commits suicide is a coward..

May the lord give the people he left behind strength.

Firstly, my deepest sympathies to all families and friends affected by the fatal fire Sep 3 and now Mr. Babb. This latest twist to the fiery saga is very unfortunate. The blame game continues! Many mistake were made trying to save these six young women and Mr. Babb was most likely pressured into committing such an act. Why? What are the counselors, pastors, and churches, doctors etc. doing to rehabilitate those affected directly and indirectly? Just want to add that our post mortem to this tragedy is not being handled well either. Barbadians must stop blaming themselves and the rescue personnel, then try to put a proper systems in place to handle tragedies of this nature. BARBADOS’ NOT PREPARED FOR ACTS OF TERRORISM. Hurricanes too, but that is another story and hopefully we will be spared this hurricane season.

Regards,

A Johnny

This is so unfortunate that a young man would take his life and leave his 5 children and girlfriend to grieve him irregardless of the cause. My heart goes out to the family.

The criminals which portrayed that wicked attack on the city were nothing short of terrorists.  This is the result of a nation terrorised by that horrible event.  Terrorists! I say….  My condolences also to the Babb family; his significant other, Mrs. Griffith; and his children.

You may well be correct in what you’re saying, but you don’t know what his state of mind was at that particular time, what unbearable anguish he might have been going through that would cause him to believe that death was preferable to life.
Whatever the reason, it forced him to forget about his loved ones and the sorrow that would follow his passing. Try not to judge him too harshly because some people are stronger than others, and what builds one person up, can break another person down.

This article was a very poor portrayal of facts or rumour. Just to clarify for the previous commentor Mr. Babb had one job with the QEH and volunteered as an EMT with the Red Cross.
The article was quite contradictorary and has only contributed to additional questions being asked like,
- Was Shanna, the young girl who died, alive with a faint pulse, and if so is it not required that the EMT proceed to save her life thus the need to remove her from the scene? What was really the purpose of introducing the fact that investigations had commenced, is it to imply that Mr. Babb committed suicide as a result?

-Additionally the room that the person was being questioned as I understand the house that Mr.Babb died in was one room, so is the article implying that the person was not in the house in which Mr.Babb died, that maybe Mr. Babb was not found in the house, that there is another place being identified as the scene…confusing!
-Ok so I am assuming that Mr.Babb was at the stadium before going to the scene, what purpose does this serve to the story.
-The introduction of the fact that the body was left in the middle of QEH hallway I hope this is fact because it is quite inflammatory.

There is something very strange about Mr.Babb’s alleged suicide. Why would he do this so soon after his heroic act? It seems he had plans to marry and there is no indication to his family that he was so inclined. It just does not add up.

The smell of a rat always brings on a lead… the stench must be found and most times you find things around the decay that you did not know you had before sometims its valuable and sometimes not. Which ever way you eventually get to clean up. My heart goes out to the 6 families that lost loved ones and I am so sorry for Babb’s Soul God gives life and He takes it away in His time… Allow the media to do their work and the police theirs. I consider myself a Trini/Bajan and have travelled to Barbados over one dozen times in a couple years. I feel safe in your country and I bost about it so to the person who was considering not to come to Barbados for vacation “happy landing where you may go” Barbados is the best place to be.

We should get the facts on matters before jumping to conclusions and talking nonsense. Those that work in the emergency field often see a lot of gore and it takes a very strong person to function after that, maybe it is best that some of us be exposed to the environment to get a greater understanding of the lives of emergency personnel. It is a shame that another life has been lost as a result of this tragedy.

My condolences to family and friends of the six young women who perished in last Friday blaze.  Also condolences to Mr. Babb’s family and friends. Please note that these two robbers are now responsible for seven deaths (Babb’s included).  However why are questions being asked about the removal of Shana’s body.  I thought Shana was still alive when she was taken from the building.  I thought we were trying to save a life.  Was she supposed to stay and die without a chance?  Was this not a rescue mission? The authorities have a lot to give an account for.

And we wonder why Aldo would even consider taking his own life.. not that I agree it was best, but He has been tried and convicted already. Up to point before Commissioner’s Press Conference it was suppose to be Guyanese now the possibility exist for Barbadians its now Babb… Imagine the man come down to volunteer… to try to save these young people from perishing… Well watch the video on youtube if we really want to see what Babb was doing and I do hope we see the other emergency personnel along with Him… cause the way this sound like its a one man act.

Something is so wrong with this story. Mr Babb an A class EMT who responded to Joes River, accidents, house fire and many more Trauma situations, a well trained man, no something wrong. I think some person know what happen so come foward.
