Alexandra School principal, Jeff Broomes. (FP)

One month after 30 strikers at the Alexandra School returned to work, principal Jeff Broomes is adamant that he will not be discussing his teachers or matters relating to his school with the Press or anyone outside of the Ministry of Education.
On January 4 this year teachers represented by the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) made good a threat to withdraw their services if Broomes was not separated from the school.
They remained off the job for close to three weeks and were joined on the picket line by the wider membership of the union.
Following two lengthy meetings with Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, the teachers agreed to end the strike and returned to work on January 25.
Stuart intervened after Minister of Education Ronald Jones could not find a resolution to the issues at the school, which saw the teachers taking industrial action for three consecutive years starting in January 2010.

This story is only the icing on the cake because Mr. Broomes seems to love controversy. About him not speaking to the press etc, I just would say that the tax payers of this country have all rights to know what is going with the situation of this school. So many teachers will not just walk out of a school like that unless some serious matter occurred, if you are a good leader then one can compromise but if defiant and appear to be dogmatic, then he/she are not fit to be a leader.
We are still listening for a report on how a headmaster can issue a punishment of having a student’s hair cut without consent which in my opinion is malicious bodily harm. I was and still is against children being flogged in schools because it does not make a child learn better. There are other methods of punishing a child without these Slave measures; we are in the 21 century and should base our energies on new ways of technology in order to secure the future of our land and its people, beating the hell out of our children will not help.

Comment LinkYou are right. You don’t have to talk to the Press and they can’t make you talk. But please talk to the heavenly Father and seek his wise counsel for your sins of omission and sins of commissions.
