The red carpet was rolled out at Combermere School last Monday night as the school’s old scholars association honoured the accomplishment of the newly appointed President of the Senate Kerryann Ifill.

Senator Ifill, 38, made history in March when she became the first woman and disabled individual to be appointed President of the Senate.

In her remarks, Leader of Government business in the Senate, Senator Maxine McClean, acknowledged that in a profound way she respected the accomplishments of her President who has overcome her challenges, continuing to distinguish herself in society as she served her nation.

Former Combermere principal Dorien Pile recalled how quickly students and teachers embraced Ifill as a student with disability.

“This is Combermere, and you have blossomed here. You are an encouragement to all persons who have challenges. You have shown them how you can overcome challenges with determination and hard work,” said an emotional Pile.

Former classmate Toni Moore said the day Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced her friend’s elevation “was a moment of history and a moment of pride that we, her friends, shared in a very special way.

The senator thanked all who had contributed to her successes and achievements in life. (AH)
