DEAR CHRISTINE: Act of kindness made my day
Mon, April 30, 2012 - 12:00 AM
I am hoping you will post this letter for me. I would be so grateful!
Late December 2010, I was in Barbados visiting my sick parents. I was waiting at a bus stop heading from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to Bridgetown.
Confused and stressed about my parents’ health, I could not find the money I had put aside for bus fare.
While I stood frustrated and rummaging through my purse, a young woman summoned me to get on the bus. I did, and she paid my bus fare. The bus was crowded with standing room only. This made it quite difficult to introduce myself. The bus got less crowded only when I was about to get off.
Ironically it seemed as though everyone got off at my stop. She was still sitting on the bus when I exited. Nonetheless, I was able to offer her something through the window for her for her kindness.
I felt horrible because it was so small and she was such a light in my dark day.
She had no idea what that small act of kindness had done for me.
It allowed me to know that some things in Barbados have not changed, even though the looks she received from some of the passengers when she paid my bus fare were outrageous.
I would be ever so grateful if you could pass on this letter with my email.
While it has taken some time for you to pen this letter, I sure hope this young woman sees it and makes contact with you. You are right! There are still some kind people around.
