Gibbs-Taitt raps Benn for comment

Gibbs-Taitt raps Benn for comment Malcolm Gibbs-Taitt: DIRECTOR GENERAL of the Barbados Consumers Research Organization (BARCRO).

Tue, June 19, 2012 - 12:01 AM

DIRECTOR GENERAL of the Barbados Consumers Research Organization (BARCRO), Malcolm Gibbs-Taitt, has lashed out at Minister of Trade and Commerce Senator Haynesley Benn for talking about the organization in “a negative way”.

Furthermore, he told the DAILY NATION, the cash-strapped association was not  in a position to do more in the protection of consumers unless they were given a subvention from Government.

Gibbs-Taitt’s comments came against the backdrop of Benn’s presence at the launch of the soon to be registered Consumer Trade and Research Association (CTRA).

And during the opening of a two-day seminar on Promotion Of Consumer Protection In the Caribbean at the Amaryllis Hotel recently, Benn called for consumer bodies here to do more to address pertinent issues relating to commerce.

And such a comment from the esteemed "Director-General", has shaken the earth to the point of making "news"?? I signed up to the new consumer organisation at the LES Centre, two weeks ago, immediately I saw their desk, manned by thwo charming ladies. Two days later, I had their official receipt by mail!

Best advice I can give to the complaining "D-G" : swallow your pride; join BARP, and also the new Consumer organisation, and give them the benefit of your experience. And spare us tiresome, self-serving, and repetitive "contributions" on BOTH call-in radio shows.

This consumer organisation is much needed, but seems to be going nowhere fast. Funny how Mr Taitt emerges from the woodwork at some opportune time and then recoils. If you are fighting for a cause, Mr Taitt, you can't do it half heartedly. Don't mind the cash strapped talk, an organisation such as this can garner good support if properly organised. If my memory serves me right, last time you emerged, you were entering the political arena, but I am open to correction. What is on the agenda this time?

Listen up everybody! A lot of these consumer watchdog organizations are not going to have to worry about consumer
complaints too much longer you know why? Because a lot of
companies with shabby business practices are going to be
destroyed through social media networks. Its already happening people talk about products and services and a lot of
businesses in Barbados and abroad are going to be affected.
Either they are going to shape up or go out of business its as simple as that. Other companies that want that business are paying close attention. Facebook has already made a huge impact on businesses good and bad.

Talking about biting the hand that could feed yuh!!! why are all these Organizations springing up and then going with outstretched hands to the Government for a Subvention (aka Money) If you can't stand on your two own feet, keep crawling. if the Government is supporting you, how can you assure me that you will be critical of them when that times comes to do so???. let me answer my own question. you can't and you won't
