Local talent checked first The mural at the centre of debate in Speightstown, St Peter. (FP)

Developers of a huge mural at Speightstown in St Peter say they are “deeply offended” by statements made by veteran designer Carol Cadogan-Fox about it, now 90 per cent complete at Queen’s Street.

The 80-by-20-foot mural was conceptualized by Mango’s By The Sea owner Pierre Spenard and is the responsibility of the Speightstown Enhancement Fund Trust, headed by Harold Hoyte, editor emeritus of THE NATION.

Cadogan-Fox has raised concern that the heritage project is not being done solely by local artists.

In responding to her, Hoyte said: “The trust is satisfied that every effort was made to have this work done by local artists, and recognized the next best thing was to get the world’s best and use the result as a tool to give Barbados a stand-out piece of public art while positioning the island to benefit from exposure to the global art community.”
