HE DIDN’T establish any new marks but Javed Mounter sure set the record straight.
Any doubts about who’s the country’s best track sprinter have been laid to rest – just like cycling’s senior field – after Mounter won both the kilo and keirin to highlight the opening night of the National Cycling Track Championships at the Randolph Field Velodrome on Thursday night.
Racing under the Velo Caribe banner, the national 200-metre record-holder beat in-form independent Jamol Eastmond for the keirin crown before upending A-Class Batteries Golden Wheelers’ Shane Weekes in the kilo.
Eastmond did get some measure of solace, though, taking the night’s last event when he outlasted CGI G4S Swift teammates Brandon Wilkie and Ross Callender in the scratch race.
Earlier, Team Swift’s Liam Lovell enjoyed two wins, with victory in the juvenile category’s keirin and 500-metre races.
His clubmate Jesse Kelly, who recently returned from a successful stint in Pennsylvania, won the juniors’ keirin and kilo, while Deidre Mayers went one up on Fugen rival Esther Miller-Rosemond in the women’s 500 metres.
Independent sensation Stuart Maloney was a two-time winner as well after taking the masters’ keirin and kilo ahead of Velo Caribe’s Ricky Tempro and Ricardo Hinkson of Team Swift, respectively.
The Championships continued last night with the pursuit and 200-metre qualifying and are slated to conclude tonight at the same venue. (JM)
