Payne sues fellow MP

Payne sues fellow MP George Payne. (FP)

New member of parliament Edmund Hinkson has pledged to defend a lawsuit said to have been brought against him by Barbados Labour Party (BLP) colleague George Payne.

The issue apparently arose out of a dispute following the February 21 general election which the BLP lost to the Democratic Labour Party in a razor-thin 16 to 14 result.

Payne is reported to be seeking damages for “defamation” as a result of certain alleged statements made by Hinkson during a meeting at BLP headquarters on February 25 when MPs met to select the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. All elected parliamentarians with the exception of Owen Arthur were present.

The claim, filed in the Supreme Court on Payne’s behalf, is not only seeking damages but also to restrain Hinkson or his servants or agents from repeating the allegedly defamatory words. (ES)

This sounds ridiculous! Rather than trying to defend his outburst Mr Hinkson should be seeking to settle this issue which seems to date back to his nomination for the St James North seat in a different forum.

Not one of my favourite politicians and will never be but if indeed his character was defame by another who should know better he therefore has the right to seek legal recourse. His actions therefore should not be held and interpreted at the political level since the matter is one that is personal.

I disagree Lloyd for years the 'Blp has accused and pointed the finger at the dlp, and rightly so, for infighting. this was in a time when things seemed to be on the up and up in the blp and now that they r in opposition everybody is at each others throats..this has everything to do with politics..they are now portraying the same attitudes that the then dlp were exhibiting...they need to get themselves together picking at each other for nonsense they need to called out and made accountable...it has never beenthe blp way to air greavences in public but it seems now that anything goes this is foolishness and i think if they continue like this God forbid, they will loose many supporters and i am at the top of the list.

Don't get into the politic things people all. When the grapes are ripe, they all consume together. Quite photogenic though.
The grapes must be sour. Tamuch rain!

Point taken. I commented on the charge of defamation, which I felt was personal and not political. But now that you have expanded I am agreement. Thank you for the incite.

They are ripping each other apart in the name of the Law! I wonder if this 'suit' would be going on had the BLP won the election...Hmmm. I doubt it!

Sore and sour (grapes) losers! With no goodies to consume they will now consume their own. I tell yah!

These two MPs and attorneys from the same party could not settle this out of court.

Well well, I think it is about time he get what was coming to him for a long time. Don't pretend to be all love and know you are divided. It would have been better to solve this without airing it in public.
