Police to deal with trouble spots

Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin last night promised an “appropriate response” to ease the fears and tension that have engulfed City trouble spots of Chapman Lane and New Orleans.

Dottin spoke to the WEEKEND NATION, five hours after police descended on New Orleans, removing barricades erected by fearful residents to keep out intruders following Wednesday’s shooting incident that left three youths hurt.

The Commissioner labelled the violent episode as an “undesirable development” and gave the assurance that steps would be taken for the protection and safety of residents. He stopped short of giving a time frame.

There were no gun shots piercing the air in New Orleans yesterday, but a tense calm prevailed as a two vehicle police patrol arrived on the scene just after 2 p.m.

Minutes later, the officers were seen lifting away the two large posts and two tables that were placed in the roadway by youths, who claim they have been targetted by a gang from nearby Chapman Lane.

Posted by RANDY BRIDGEMAN 6 months, 2 weeks ago: I favor a multi-pronged approach to handling criminal acts which flare up in these communities from time to time. Perpetrators must be apprehended, charged accordingly and tried as quickly as possible in a court of law. If found guilty, stiff sentences should be handed down to punish the guilty and to send a clear message to potential criminals that crime will not be tolerated anywhere in Barbados.

Preventive measures must be put in place in an effort to forestall criminal activity. Town hall-type meetings could be organized where input from residents is solicited and relevant suggestions incorporated into these measures. When residents buy into, and embrace a plan, they're more apt to support it. They must have a vested interest in same for it to have a chance at success. Police presence is a must too, not in a heavy-handed manner but more in terms of effective community policing/service.
