QEH ‘already struggling’

GOVERNMENT’S $35 MILLION CUT in funding for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) adds insult to injury to the already under-funded institution and could lead to a drastic reduction in the quality of public health care, says the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP).
The doctors’ trade union has also called on the Freundel Stuart administration to reconsider the proposed freeze on temporary workers in the public sector providing essential services  such as health care.
The cuts are part of an austerity programme announced by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler in the presentation of this year’s Budget on Tuesday.
In a media release yesterday, BAMP said that at present the QEH was struggling to meet its daily commitments to the public and the proposed cut would make a desperate situation worse.  (SP)
