BARBADIAN international pop star Rihanna is being given a plot of land by Government at the upscale Apes Hill Development in St James.
A resolution to vest the 2 635 square-metre parcel of land in the superstar, under her given name – Robyn Rihanna Fenty – is expected to be taken to the House of Assembly today at 10 a.m. by Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley.
Apes Hill Club is a partnership between Sir Charles Williams, owner of the island’s largest construction company, and Landmark Land Company, one of the most prestigious community, golf and resort developers in the world.
Set among 470 acres of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery Barbados has to offer, Apes Hill golf and polo community has panoramic views of both the famous west coast and dramatically rugged east coast.
According to the addendum of the resolution, on February 18, 2010, Cabinet agreed to donate the land, which had been acquired by private treaty between Apes Hill Development SRL and the Crown on June 30, 2009, to Rihanna.
It will be subject to the easements, restrictive covenants and conditions contained in the conveyance and Deed of Covenant between the Apes Hill Club Owners Association and the Crown, dated June 30, 2009.
Among the provisions of the grant are that the payment of all legal costs relating to this transaction will be met by the Crown; and in the event of the resale of the land within 15 years, Rihanna shall reimburse the Crown the price paid for the land.
There is another resolution to compulsorily acquire two parcels of land, totalling 7 230.4 square metres, owned respectively by Forbes International Moving & Storage Co. Ltd (3 688.8 square metres), and Eric Hassell & Son Ltd (3 541.6 square metres), both at Deacons Road, St Michael, for housing development. (AB)

What a waste of public resources in this midst of this tragic recession.

Comment LinkHow does this make sense? We all love Rihanna and are proud of her achievements. But surely there is a better way to spend tax payers money. We could just as easily (and more cost effectively) honour her with damehood (knighthood for women).
Our elected leaders have a responsibility to manage the people’s money. Or have they already given up hope of re-election?

Comment LinkI certainly do not begrudge Rihanna. I’m glad that she was able to succeed and hope that she continues to do well. However, life doesn’t seem fair when this young woman who has millions and can buy any piece of land in Barbados, is given prime land in Barbados by the Government free of cost. If it’s hard for me to understand this, what about the Barbadian who cannot find a place to live? What about the Barbadian who has been trying for years to call of piece of the rock his own?
Man I tell ya, life aint fair ah tall ah tall ah tall.

Comment LinkAm i the only one wondering why is this happening, there are homeless children in Barbados, why would the Government give land( which could used for low income houses) to her, when she can afford to pay for it.
Then again only the Caribbean with there narrow mindedness would do such a thing.

Comment LinkAre they serious give Rhianna land “Fa Wha” ! Seriously they need to give to people who are well deserving of it like hardworking single mothers, poor families, real artist who support and represent Barbados (ex allison hinds, rupee, krosfyah, natahlee etc.) Rhianna Barbados you can do better than that. What a way to waste good land.

Comment LinkIs it just me or is anyone else seeing a problem with this.
She can afford to purchase her own property after all she has done so in America.
I do agree that her rise to fame has placed Barbados a little more prominently on the world map: but let us not forget that it has also afforded her some very lucrative contracts.

Comment LinkMay I ask why is it necessary for the Goverment of Barbados to be purchasing property for Rihanna? Isn’t Rihanna is a position to acquire such transactions on her own? isn’t she financially stable enough?
I dont recall any such decisions make for other well known citizens. Perhaps an explanation as to why this land is being purchase by the Crown is forthcoming!

Comment LinkOk. I’m all for acknowledging accomplishments of the young and showing that they can do something good and postive. My problem with her being given this land is, who will have to pay for it. Where is government going to get the money to pay for this? I guess when my taxes go up I’ll know why. Could they not have named a day after her? Or rename a building, a children’s play park or give her a plaque somewhere? Geez land worth over a million at this time.
Thanks for showing me how much you really want to reduce the deficit and improve the standard of living for us.
I have to go work on my household budget.

Comment LinkI understand that things have to be done the legal way , but all this talk , hurry up and give this young lady the piece of land before she turns old and grey. She is not begging you all for this piece of land she is not waiting on it to put a house. All these stipulations about resale and stuff if I was her I would let you all keep the piece of land. Bajans have a way of giving stuff and the whole world know, or like a cow giving a pail of milk and then kicking it down.
Concern Bajan

Comment Linkgive her all that land that hard working bajans pay taxes for, what about poor people that are homeless and have no place to live, I hope she sells it in five years and pay back the money to the state or whatever you guys call it. I don’t mind giving her 1,000 sq feet but 2,000? that extra 1,000 couldve been given to some poor people that looking for land to build a house.
