The horse racing industry in Barbados has been dealt a major blow with the sudden death of 2012 Sandy Lane Gold Cup winner Dancin David.
His passing comes as a huge loss to owner Sir David Seale and the Hopefield Stable contingent.
WEEKENDSPORT understands that while being shod, the horse acted up, lost his balance and broke his pelvis. He also ruptured a major artery which then led to him bleeding and quickly dying.
Dancin David, who had a history of bad luck with injuries from a juvenile to age six, electrified many fans in particular those that were close to him, like trainer Liz Deane.
She was first to point out not only the amazing stories of his survival, but the wonderful and big heart he had.
Dancin David – the son of Omega Code out of Miss Madeleine – earned $177 937 in his seven track appearances since arriving on these shores in 2011 – three wins, a third and a fourth place finish.
Days before the 2012 Gold Cup with the clock winding down and less than 24 hours before the sound of the bugle, fans of Hopefield Stable were greeted the good news that the then reserve one had been awarded a spot in the big event with the late withdrawal of Mingun Temple.
Jockey Jalon Samuel was along for the ride and it proved a great moment for the pair. The victory signalled the end of an 18-year drought for the Hopefield Stable which had last won the Caribbean’s most prestigious horse race in 1993 with Chou Chou Royale in the colours of Anne Seale, now Lady Seale.
Having quickly become a household name and one of the most feared and respected horses at the Garrison Savannah, Dancin David strode home in the Lost In The Fog Handicap over 1 800 metres by a whopping seven-and-a-half lengths.
His last victory came in the only edition of the Amstel Cup on June 30, 2012 having shouldered the top impost of 129 pounds. He won favour with the stewards after finishing a very close second to Apostle.
That ten furlong race (about 2 000 metres) for the top class horses, the first for some time, drew loads of interest among enthusiasts, many of whom wanted to see the three big guns – Dancin David, Apostle and Areutalkintome – go head to head  at the distance.
It did not end with the script one might have predicted but the anticlimax was equally as exciting to all.
Dancin David placed fourth in this year’s Gold Cup.
