Barbadians have no reason to fear Sagicor’s plan to move its headquarters from the island in the face of downgrades from Standard & Poor’s.

And while former Prime Minister Owen Arthur called the move a “national tragedy”, president and chief executive officer Dodridge Miller told the WEEKEND NATION yesterday that the plan to re-domicile would make Sagicor a stronger company.

Miller said in the short and long term Sagicor would get a “stronger credit rating, better access to capital at better prices and greater access to a larger pool of value-creating opportunities”, thus making the 175-year-old Barbadian company stronger.

Yesterday, Opposition Leader Mia Mottley called the decision a “blow to Barbadian pride” while Charles Herbert, chairman of local conglomerate Goddard Enterprise said he was “saddened” by the news though he understood why Sagicor made the decision.
