Worry not!

Worry not! Minister Michael Lashley. (FP)

By Mike King | Mon, May 21, 2012 - 12:10 AM

Polls don't vote.

Cabinet Minister Michael Lashley made this comment yesterday, while asserting that the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) had done enough over the last four years not to be worried about a new poll pointing to a national swing against his Government.

Last night at a DLP St James North constituency branch meeting at St Alban’s Primary School, Lashley told party faithful “not to be flustered” by the latest CADRES survey published in yesterday’s SUNDAY SUN that indicates strong dissatisfaction with the performance of the Freundel Stuart-led administration.

“I want Barbadians to look at the programmes . . . we have presented to you over the last four years,” he said. “We have scored high in health care, housing. We have built schools, made our mark in education and introduced summer camps and provided free bus fares for schoolchildren.

“When you examine our work, Barbadians cannot fault our performance, given the constraints and the environment in which we had to act. So you have to go out there in your numbers and fight for this great party. Polls don’t vote.

“We have done well thus far. No one has been laid off in the public sector and we have had no complaints about the hospital under the leadership of Donville Inniss and we have restarted the St John Polyclinic,” he said.

Mr. Michael Lashley, I happen to believe that you are absolutely right. Not only has your team, led by PM Stuart, managed to present several successful programmes but you have managed to preserve the Barbados economy in the most difficult time that we have ever faced. The Global economy is taking a beating and little Barbados continues to thrive, despite all the negativity being thrown around by your detractors and political opponents. The big problem however, is that your administration has failed to sing its praises and blow your own horn. This notion of silently and quietly achieving is hurting you. I marvel at the fact that you continue to silently take abuse about the Alexandra and Clico affairs, among others, when in fact the previous administration handed these problems to you. Do your people point that out to the public. No. There is a marked absence of regular scheduled communication bulletins or state-of-the-nation addresses. With one or two exceptions your team members are behaving like Ministers of Silence. Smarten up folk or the polls will come true. Nigel D.

One cannot help but be astonished at the verbal gymnastics (VG) of politicians. Indeed VG would be highy competitive as an Olympics sport. I recall when the Wickham Polls were stoutly defended by the DLP politicians and supporters and hail as the new gospel.
What has happened? It does not say today what they wanted it to reveal?
However I remain unimpressed by Wickham and his ability to pre-predict the polls'results .. that they will have negative implications for those out of his favour.
Nothwithstanding my comments, perhaps the DLP should take comfort in the fact that the most recent elections polls in the Caribbean were way off based... ex; see The bahamas.

An expected response, but the people feel differently. We shall see when the time comes if Mr. Lashley is right.

Nice reality, indeed BUT...
Politics is about Perception -not reality
and the perception is that Freun en saying a pang.

He's as dull on TV and THAT is what counts, not reality.
Sorry bout dat, but that is the reality: perception.

Polls don't vote, people do, and will do so with their eyes wide open and faculties intact. Somethings have jumped them out of their slumber.
