Lawlessness rampant in society

I read the news, listen to the radio and watch TV – and day after day, I see fingers pointed at young people who are described as “lawless”. That may, in fact, be the case, but it should come as no surprise to anyone living in Barbados. Lawlessness pervades this society.

I recently went to collect a package of personal items that I’d ordered online and had shipped to Barbados.

When I arrived at the company that had received the shipment, a Customs officer came up to the counter with my paperwork in hand and for the next ten minutes he berated and bullied me in a loud and belligerent manner in front of the company’s staff, other customers in the office and my 16-year-old son – who all looked on in hushed disbelief.

The officer accused me of making a “fraudulent declaration” and even after I explained, repeatedly, that I had not completed any declaration – and I presumed the shipping company had done that – he continued with his loud accusations.

Appalled and truly shocked, I finally turned and walked out of the office, without my package.

Thankfully, the next day, the overseas shipper clarified the situation and confirmed that a simple error had been made on their part. But what an eye-opener for me!

If you wonder what’s gone awry in this country these days – just look around. Lawless, discourteous and shameful behaviour is everywhere and it inevitably penetrates all segments of our society.

We all need to lead by example – repeated rhetoric just isn’t good enough at this point. To paraphrase the late Michael Jackson – “if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change”.
