Oh, to be on the safe side!

Oh, to be on the safe side! ()

I have a safety concern that manifested itself before about 100 of us at the Caribbean T20 Semi-Finals on Saturday, January 21, at the Kensington Oval.

When I purchased my tickets for the Caribbean T20 games, I was informed by the cashier that there was no seat numbering and I could sit anywhere in the Greenidge & Haynes Stand.

On Friday, January 20, my family, as well as others, were seated in an area where entry was through two unlocked doors. On Saturday, January 21, I entered the same area through these unlocked doors, after being informed by the cashier that a person could sit anywhere in the stand, and it was my observation that all the seats in other areas were filled.

About 8:20 p.m. during the course of the second semi-final of the Caribbean T20 a guard from G4S entered the area to announce he was locking the doors.

I, as well as others, asked him why he was. His response was: “Orders from management.”

I asked  the guard if he wanted us to leave. He said: “No.”

I said to him: “Do you know that it is wrong to lock a door in a public place without leaving a means of escape in the event of an emergency?”

His response was: “Orders from management.”

About 8:40 p.m. a man wearing a security tag entered an adjacent area occupied by Sports And Games, saying he was representing management and did not want anyone exiting the area we were in through this adjacent booth with the only unlocked door.

I asked him why the doors were locked, and he said: “We did not rent out this area.”

I said: “If you wanted us to leave this area and lock the doors you could have said that.”

His response was: “I don’t want you to leave the area.”

I further asked him: “If there is an emergency at the cricket, what will the people in here do?”

His response: “Wunna would jump over the balcony.”

Included in this area were women and children as well. I am of the view that this is in contravention of Sections 33, 35 and 38 of the Factories Act.

If you were in the Democratic Labour Party administration, how would you respond to the latest CADRES poll which was not favourable to the Government?
