Some points for Mr Archer ()

Mr Cecil A.N. Archer’s letter Real Questions For Mr Garcia in Monday’s DAILY NATION does a serious disservice to this unfortunate human being who has already paid a heavy price for his crime, by serving a 20-year prison sentence, and by being imprisoned for an additional two years, eight months and counting.

I would like Mr Archer and others who think like him to be aware of the following:

1. It came out at Mr Garcia’s trial and appeal many years ago that the drugs that had been landed in Barbados were not destined for this country; they were actually en route to North America.

2. In January 2009, the head of custody of the Barbados Prison Service produced a letter of report in which he stated that Mr Garcia “is a true example of a person who has recognized his wrong and uses every occasion to talk to other inmates about the dangers of illegal drugs”.

3. Father Clement Paul, one of Mr Garcia’s main counsellors in prison, also produced a letter of report on Garcia and asserted that “it is with pleasure that I can attest to his reformed condition as a rehabilitated person”.

Surely, Mr Archer and others like him who really know little or nothing about Mr Garcia should be willing to be guided by the Government officials and institutions that were responsible for overseeing his rehabilitation!
