Doing it digital

ART IS ART and the digital process just another way of putting it across the same as oils, charcoal, pastels, watercolours, collage, mixed media or whatever was pretty much the point made by Ricardo Redman at the launch of the National Art Gallery Committee's Sign Of The Times (a decade towards digital art) at the Queen's Park Gallery.
Running until May 30, it's presented in association with the National Cultural Foundation and curated by Nerys Rudder.
Fourteen artists who work digitally are featured. The work is incredibly imaginative and shows the extraordinary liberation made possible when using digital.
Young Matthew Clarke and Jabari Batson show astounding creativity with their artwork Matthew using the comic book approach.
Khalil Goodman shows digitally enhanced photographic figures to project a Hindu-like multi-armed avatar and a character like Ariel from Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Indrani Nayar-Gall exhibits wit and illustrative talent. Rasheed Boodhoo says, " . . . the camera is my tool . . . " and takes on a serious outlook and even gets poetic.
Bill Grace and William Cummins, who are most familiar with this medium, have turned in work to hold your interest for more than a minute or two. Grace's mandalas (hanging art) can be viewed on video at the gallery.
Winston Edghill has made use of colour and inanimate subjects and used clever titles like Corru-garish.
Then there's Ewan Atkinson who is a stunning example of what can happen digitally.
Still more to behold Monday to Saturday, Queen's Park, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Streets Paved With Gold is a one-man show written and performed by Victor Richards. He is exploring "Afro-Caribbean migration and themes of hope, identity and image." Billed as "a thrilling and informative picture of the collective experiences of Black Brit citizens."
It opens with a matinee for students with ID on May 16 and general audiences on May 17 and 18 at the Errol Barrow Centre For Creative Imagination.
On Monday, May 19, same venue, a free sunset concert from 7 p.m. with Israeli concert pianist Rami Bar-Niv, under the patronage of Israeli ambassador Shlomo Cohen, the concert is in honour of the 60th anniversary of the state of Israel.by Carolle BOURNE
