Fans will have to wait for the big tennis clash.

That’s because the much anticipated matchup of Davis Cup teammates in the finals of the SOL/Island Heritage Nationals men’s open singles will now not take place because Haydn Lewis withdrew from the tournament on Sunday due to a back injury.

Seanon Williams and Russell Moseley, who have played each other in the finals of all the sanctioned tournaments this year, are now seeded to meet in the semi-finals of the Nationals

Both the No. 3 and No. 4 Davis Cup players were eagerly looking forward to playing their No. 2 teammate, who had been the top seed in the tournament.

On his way to the semis, Moseley defeated promising junior Mathew Foster-Estwick 6-0, 6-4. The more experienced Moseley began the game very aggressively, not allowing
Foster-Estwick to settle, and forced several errors to take the first set without dropping a game.

However, Foster-Estwick continued his positive play and was able to break Moseley in the first game of the second set. Moseley then broke back in the fourth game, but Foster-Estwick again broke in the fifth, having his best opportunity while leading at 4-2 and with break points to go up 5-2. However, Moseley rallied back, holding serve and wrapping up the match without losing another game.

Williams earned his place in the semis by defeating top junior Gavin Hutchinson 6-2, 6-3.

Hutchinson took the early break to lead 3-2 but Williams was able to overpower him and close out the match without too much difficulty.

The men’s semi between Moseley and Williams is slated for 6 p.m. today at the National Tennis Centre. (BA/PR)
