WHEN?THE?POWERADE?Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSSAC)?start today at the National Stadium, Akela Jones will take centre stage as she attempts to break Cherita Howard’s National long jump record of 6.43 metres.
The tall, versatile 16-year-old Springer Memorial athlete warmed up for the event last weekend at the CARIFTA?Trials when she had a leap of 6.17 metres following previous jumps of 6.42 and 6.28 metres at her school sports and the Louis Lynch Championships.
She should also easily establish a new BSSAC?mark in the Girls’ Under-20 division by eclipsing the 5.73 metres which Fiona Sobers set way back in 1992.
