I have been a patient of Dr Alfred Sparman’s for 12 years. My heart is very weak and has been so since my first heart attack 19 years ago. Over the years Dr Sparman has taken very good care of me, as he does for all his patients. I can call him at any time of the day or night on his cellphone, even when he is not in the island. This gives me and my husband peace of mind, knowing that he is always on call, especially when we need him in an emergency. Recently, I [had] been having a lot more chest pains and difficulty breathing than normal; so Dr Sparman strapped me up to a heart monitor for 24 hours. He was very concerned with what he saw, given the history of my family members dying suddenly from heart attacks. He suggested that a defibrillator needed to be implanted and we agreed that this was the best course of action to take. The operation was planned for a Tuesday morning. I was prepped and ready to go into the operating room when it was later confirmed that the defibrillator had not arrived in Barbados as scheduled, due to an error in shipping. Not wanting to waste any time, Dr Sparman spoke with one of his contemporaries in Trinidad about purchasing one over there. He left that night and arrived back at 6 a.m. the next day. The operation was performed later that morning and by 1:30 p.m., I was back home, having had a very successful operation. Since the defibrillator was fitted, all the many irregular chest pains I endured have vanished and I am breathing normally again. My husband also had a defibrillator implanted by Dr Sparman in 2011 and that operation, too, was successful. I have complete confidence in Dr Sparman; so I am saying to you, fellow Barbadians, why are you going overseas to have such an operation, considering the hassle of booking flights, hotel accommodation, transportation, and operating costs, which are double in price? A special thank you to Dr Sparman, team members Karen, Donessa, and Darius, and all staff members who were very kind to me.
