Christmas celebrations have already started for husband and wife golfers, Mark Blakeley and Leiza Munn-Blakeley.

The former Jamaica national representatives combined on Sunday to win the Barbados Golf Association’s (BGA) President’s Putter, an annual year-ending tournament at the Royal Westmoreland course.

The champions posted an outstanding 56 strokes in the two-ball/better-ball tournament after a flying start where Leiza, who won the RBC Classic women’s championship a week ago, registered an eagle on their second hole.

Thereafter, Mark (handicap 3) and Leiza (handicap 9), maintained solid drives, accurate chips and near-perfect putts, while also sinking eight birdies along the way. Second were David Vowles and John Odle with 60, while the third-placed team was Charles Edey and Henderson Forde (62).

The President’s Putter featured a 1 p.m. shotgun start and attracted 72 players on a sunny day where the Westmoreland course offered considerable roll for good drives and friendly greens for those able to pick the correct lines.

Following competition on the fairways and greens, BGA President Cally Boyea thanked all players, officials, sponsors and management of the host course for their contribution to a successful tournament and for their support of golf throughout the year.

He said the Putter was the final of 12 senior tournaments organised by the BGA in 2014 and they were looking forward to another active year in 2015.

Boyea also noted that the BGA must consistently raise funds for the further development of golf and to assist national senior and junior teams.

The BGA 2015 season will open at the Barbados Golf Club with the New Year Hamper on January 10. (PR/EZS)
