Northern risk

A COMBINATION OF illegal dumping and a lack of action from the authorities have been blamed for the flooding in Speightstown during the passing of Tropical Storm Harvey on August 18.

That’s the view of chairman of the St Peter District Emergency Organisation, Dave Hurley, who said the northern town had not been so badly affected by floodwaters since 2004 as a result of the diligence of concerned professionals, but the bad habits of some Barbadians threatened to undo that hard work.

He took a WEEKEND NATION team on a tour of part of the watercourse which flows to Speightstown, beginning at Mount Brevitor North.

“This watercourse flows from Indian Ground and Free Hill. From 2002-2005, we built dams along the watercourse with help from the Japanese government. They dug out something like a sinkhole where water would collect, then flow out and would not all rush down one time and flood out Speightstown,” he said. (CA)
