Women steal road tennis show

THE FEMALES UPSTAGED their male counterparts when the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-Operative Credit Union Limited Monarchs Of The Court road tennis action continued on Thursday night at De Big Rock Arena, Spring Garden.

The match of the night proved to be a showdown between the well attired Cherene Ward and Juliet Worrell, who both looked ready for a Vogue shoot rather than a Professional Road Tennis Association road tennis battle. Ward came from a game down to sneak home in three gripping sets 22-24, 21-15, 21-18.

The petite Ward committed numerous unforced errors, which allowed the more consistent Worrell taking an 8-3 lead early. Ward then called on her growing skills and she locked the scores at eight with a gem which she turned sharply and dropped in the V behind the net.

That first game saw the lead being exchanged and the scores were matched up to 22 before Worrell took the advantage, pumping her fist in celebration. In a case of deja vu, Worrell trailed 3-8 in the second game before locking at eight before a more controlled Ward powered away to take that game and set up the decider. (KB)
