FORMER NATIONAL CHAMPION Anthazia Mason warmed up for the women’s knockout finals on Sunday with a vicious dismissal of Chargers 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 when the Goddard Enterprises Limited division one volleyball action continued on Wednesday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Mason, who holds the record of winning titles with Toners, Deacons, Chargers and Warrens, showed the kind of form which earned her two Caribbean volleyball MVP titles. With quick attacks and crunching spikes into the court or off the block, Mason belied her 40-plus years and gave a lesson in attack and all-round volleyball skills.
Even the normally solid Rhe-Ann Niles had to play a supporting role along with Talya Layne and young Xhane Greenidge as Pan American International Insurance Warrens remained in the lead with 33 points from a 7/1 record. Chargers competed at times with another former Barbados captain Thonya Joseph scoring early kills before she and teammates faded.
The UWI Blackbirds who will battle Warrens in Sunday’s knockout finals overturned their first round upset to Phoenix Security Services Carlton 25-21, 10-25, 25-12, 25-20. Dania Hamilton, Sharon Bovell and Tia Jones impressed for UWI with Reanna James switching from a great day in the pool at Queen’s College’s swim meet to put up great resistance for Carlton. (KB)
