REIGNING Barbados, Caribbean and Canadian Girls’ Under-15 squash champion Meagan Best closed out the year in splendid fashion by finishing third in the girls’ Under-15 age group at the US Junior Squash Open in Hartford, Connecticut.
Buoyed by winning the Canadian Junior Open U-15 title in Ontario, Canada, just last week, the 14-year-old Best continued her excellent form in this world-class event, which is billed as one of the biggest on the World Squash Federation’s Junior circuit, with 880 competitors from 34 different countries competing in various age-groups.
Best was seeded at No. 5 out of 86 competitors, and reached the semi-final after a tough 5-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7 victory over the No. 4 seed from Egypt, Malak Kamal, in her quarter-final match.
She lost in her semi-final to the eventual winner and American top seed, Marina Stefanoni, in straight games to set up her bronze medal encounter with Caridad Buenano of Ecuador.
Best won 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 to finish on the podium at the Open for the second time, after finishing third in the Under-13 age group in 2014. (PR)
