Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced today that as of last night over 25 000 people had received a coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination.

Mottley also said there are fewer than 20 000 of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines left and it is hoped these will be administered by early next week.

Mottley was aired live during VOB’s Down To Brasstacks after touring the Maurice Byer Polyclinic in St Peter.

The polyclinic is one of the centres where coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccinations are being administered.

She said, while there have been teething problems, Government is aware of its obligation to citizens. She expressed gratitude to the government of India for the gift of 100 000 doses of the vaccine for 50 000 people. The vaccine is administered in two doses.

Mottley, said, however, that Government will have to buy the other vaccines needed.

The Prime Minister said that more people have come forward to take the vaccination.

She said within the last few days 100 policemen and 70 people in the fisheries sector had expressed their interest in being inoculated.

Mottley was joined by officials including Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic and co-cordinators of the vaccination campaign Dr Elizabeth Ferdinand and Barbados Defence Force’s Major David Clarke. (KG)
