Paul “The Surfer” Bourne came out on top yesterday in the battle with Roger “The Sheriff” Skeete in the Motoring Club Barbados Inc.’s (MCBI) Full Throttle from Luke Hill to Lamberts, St Peter.
In the last speed event rally for the season, Bourne and Skeete were the only drivers in the WRC and only four-wheel drive classes, and Bourne finished with the fastest time of 2 minutes 15.12 seconds while Skeete was second in 2:17.44.
The action was hot as Skeete, in the Subaru, and Bourne, in the Ford, put on a master class, tackling the corners in contrasting styles.
Bourne looked a little tidier as he seldom had the back end of his car hanging, while Skeete had a more aggressive approach to his rallying.
Since only two cars were in the four-wheel drive class, fans were left to focus their attention on the much loved two-wheel drive battle.
Giant-killer Neil Armstrong was one of several drivers who sat out this event which had about 20 entries, leaving Rhett Watson, Ralph White and Josh Read as the top contenders.
Read is a top driver and will win the local championship in the future. He powered his way through the stage to be third overall and the fastest in the two-wheel drive class in a time of 2:21.12.
White was fourth overall and second in the two-wheel class in 2:27.16, and Watson had to settle for fifth place overall and third in that category when he posted a time of 2:28.00.
As has become the norm, Daryl Clarke maintained his dominance of the Modified 7 class with a fastest time of 2:28.15, while Neil Corbin, who like Clarke has bested his competition all year, once again won the Modified 6 class with a time of 2:33.63.
The day not only saw thrills, but spills as well. John Foster, who had been having a decent drive, decided he would thrill the fans with some sideways action. However, it all went wrong and after fighting with his Daihatsu Charmant for a bit, he lost control of the car and made his way into the grass and off the road.
No one was hurt from his off-road excursion. The fans ran to his aid and helped him back onto the road and he was able to finish his final run.
