ANYONE WITHIN earshot of the Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School did not have to wonder about the reason behind the euphoric sounds echoing throughout their community. It was all in the name of African heritage.
The morning’s activities ended on a high as hundreds of the students sang along to an impromptu performance by the Wilkie Folk Group, who performed Shakira’s Waka Waka (This Time For Africa).
Chair of the school’s African Awareness Committee, Cherilyn Christie, said the festivities were planned one day in advance.
The students were stylishly dressed in African garments while jumping and singing “This time for Africa!” repeatedly. The pupils in the audience were just as vocal as the ones on stage. (TG)
