Andre Padmore and Dakeil Thorpe were due to clash in last night’s men’s final of the Barbados Badminton Association’s Senior National Championships at Shuttlers Badminton Hall in Ealing Grove, Christ Church.

Padmore defeated Shae Martin 21-15, 18-21, 21-17 in their singles semi-final encounter on Sunday while Thorpe was also taken to three sets before triumphing over Cory Fanus 21-19, 11-21, 21-15.

Padmore put on an impressive performance to take the first set over Martin, who made a successful comeback in the second set to lock the contest.

However, Padmore once again outscored Martin to secure a berth in the final against Thorpe.

Thorpe won a close first set against Fanus, who was able to make some telling shots to limit his opponent significantly in the second set. Nonetheless, Thorpe came away with the victory in the third set.

Multi-sport athlete Amanda Haywood lost to Tamisha Williams 17-21, 21-9, 21-9 in their women’s singles semi-final.

Haywood took the first set but was unable to maintain that level of play, losing the next two to her more experienced opponent.

Former champion Shari Hope was also victorious over Monyata Riviera 13-21, 21-14, 21-14 in the other semi-final.

Padmore and Martin later teamed up to thrash Kodie King and Gavin Robinson 21-8, 21-15 in men’s doubles play while Fanus and Thorpe also defeated Harrison Griffith and Damien Howell 22-11, 21-13.

In the women’s doubles, Riviera and Williams prevailed over Haywood and Shakeira Waithe 21-11, 21-17 while Hope and Sabrina Scott rolled over Shamika Blackman and Neah Callender 21-1, 21-8.

In the mixed doubles matches, Thorpe and Williams beat Martin and Scott 21-17, 22-9 while Fanus and Riviera defeated Padmore and Hope 21-12, 21-16. (RG)
