A beaver trick from Jabarry “Papi” Chandler and a hat-trick by Daniel Calvi condemned Rendezvous to an embarrassing 8-1 thrashing by Empire on Saturday night at the Wildey AstroTurf.
Other cross-zone fixtures in the Barbados Football Association’s Premier League featured a third win for the University of the West Indies Blackbirds, who scored a 2-1 win over Paradise, and Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame, who closed the night with an entertaining 3-2 victory over Home Improvement Compton.
In the evening’s curtain-raiser, Rendezvous fell behind in the 12th minute after Calvi’s penalty kick.
Chandler doubled their advantage in the 37th minute with Calvi playing provider on this occasion. Chandler ensured a 3-0 half-time lead with his second strike in the 40th minute and got his hat-trick immediately after the restart.
Shonai Evans made it 5-0 in the 53rd minute before Man Of The Match Chandler got his fourth on the hour mark.
Brazilian Calvi brought up a superb seventh goal seven minutes later with his second strike.
Nicholas Jones got Rendezvous’ consolation from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.
Calvi concluded the massacre in stoppage time with the completion of his first hat-trick in Barbadian football.
The goal feast in the opening encounter set the stage for Paradise and UWI’s fiery clash. Paradise’s Chai Lloyd gave his team a liftoff after just three minutes but UWI captain Mario Harte equalised a minute later.
That early exchange set the pattern for the match, with both teams evenly poised for the majority of the duel.
A defiant performance by Jason Boxill in the Paradise goal was spoiled in the 89th minute when the former national goalkeeper flapped at an aerial ball. He missed and allowed Reymar Walters to walk the ball into the net for UWI.
The triple-header ended with Notre Dame overcoming a spirited Compton side. Dames’ Rakim Lashley scored the opener in the tenth minute before Compton Kishmar Wade restored equity.
With the scores locked 1-1 at half-time, it took ten second-half minutes for Dames to take the lead once more. Rickneco Mashall’s persistent drive down the right wing ended with a cross into the box which Lashley calmly stroked into the goal.
Not to be outdone, Compton equalised again through Shakily Cox in the 56th minute.
With the players seemingly headed towards a drawn result, Dames showed their fitness and pace to break away down the left flank, this time through wing back Andre Applewhaite.
His cross found Azarel Croney unmarked in the box as Compton’s sluggish defence was forced to watch in horror as the midfielder stroked the ball confidently in the net for the winner. (NM)
