Jail despite surgery

Despite being heavily bandaged after surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Monday, a man with 24 prior convictions for theft will spend the next 28 days at HMP Dodds.

Lamal Vallance Whitney, 25, of 3rd Avenue Licorish Village, My Lord’s Hill, St Michael, denied trespassing at the home of Lance Whitney and stealing a pair of $350 shoes.

Prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons objected to bail in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court based on the seriousness of the charge and the accused’s antecedents.

When Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant asked Whitney what he had to say for himself, he begged not to be sent to jail.

“I didn’t steal nothing from my brother. I live at the same residence. Also, I now out of surgery on Monday, and I don’t think I should go back to prison,” the tattoo artist pleaded, adding that he had been released from prison last month.

Whitney returns to court on June 12. (RA)
