Prime Minister Mia Mottley might love the colour red, but she does not love red tape.
So people who are seeking to have their qualifications verified, will soon find the wait reduced from two to four months to a few days.
Mottley said it was a “humbug” to people and we had to do better at real time communication in issuing certificates and diplomas, and Barbados had been identified as one of the countries with too much red tape.
She was addressing the 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) yesterday in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Mottley said between 2006 and 2018, the Barbados Accreditation Council issued 2 039 certificates and verified 1 122. Of the 3 161, only 0.3 per cent or ten were fraudulent.
She said her Cabinet agreed there was a need to change “how we do business” and believe.
“If we do that simple amendment to the legislation, it means that process which is now taking two and three and four months can now be done within two to three days at most, with respect to accreditation,” Mottley said.
However, the Prime Minister warned, if the certificate is fraudulent, the person would have to say why it should not be revoked. (SAT)
