Former Minister of Social Transformation Hamilton Lashley is calling for the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) to be extended to youth residing in national housing units across the island.

“I call the BDFSP a successful social intervention that has really acted as a transformation agent in many of the lives of our young people. I can attest to the fact that a large number of those young men that were idle and on the block entered the BDFSP and are now model citizens of this country.

“It should be replicated across the various communities in Barbados with special emphasis on the housing areas. Most people in Barbados view the BDFSP as just a sports programme but it is far more than that. Over its three decades it is possibly one of the most successful sporting programmes in Barbados,” he said.

Lashley said hearing the initial news that the programme was going to come to an end after 28 years brought him great sadness, and he is now extremely happy to hear that the BDF would now absorb the cost to keep it going. (RG)
