Uber anger

Taxi operators are up in arms over plans to introduce Uber services in Barbados. The consensus among many of them was that Uber would cause mass confusion in an already saturated industry.

On Sunday, Minister of Tourism Kerrie Symmonds said Government was looking at offering Uber a licence to operate here with taxi operators, in an attempt to advance how travelling operations were done.

However, Andrea Daniel, Roger Jordan and Rodney Daniel, who operate at the Rockley, Christ Church taxi stand, said they were appalled by the suggestion. They argued that Barbados was too small for all the taxi operators and Uber participants to get a fair piece of the pie.

“He [Symmonds] might say they trying to work that system to the benefit of the small man, but I believe it’s a way for larger businesses to get in and dominate the industry,” Jordan said. (SB)
