Fatal gun violence came to the doorstep of Parliament on Friday night, prompting Minister of Home Affairs Edmund Hinkson to plead with Barbadians to put down the guns while he again pledged Government’s commitment to eradicate guns.

Staunch supporter of the Democratic Labour Party and fierce canvasser in St Michael North West, Oscar “Nard” Hamblin, was the latest victim shot multiple times in the Marhill Street/Palmetto Square, The City area.

The elderly man of Deacons Farm, St Michael, was well-known in the area and bystanders said he could often be seen in Parliament back when his favourite party was in power. He was said to have been shot several times, with one bullet striking him in the head.

Officer in charge of the Bridgetown Division, Superintendent Margaret Stephen, said shots were fired around 6:35 p.m. and when the police responded, they found the body in the road. She said a nearby doctor attempted resuscitation but failed and the man was later pronounced dead. (CA)
