Regional airline LIAT and the international carrier American Airlines on Friday cancelled flights in and out of Barbados, owing to the impact on the island of Tropical Storm Tomas.
AA was the first to report on local radio that its Barbados flight out of San Juan this evening had been cancelled.
The airline also cancelled its Miami and San Juan flights, scheduled to depart Bridgetown on Saturday.
LIAT also cancelled its Grenada/Trinidad service, which was due to leave the island at 5.45 AM tomorrow.
Affected passengers have been told to contact both airlines for further updates.
A tropical storm warning is now in effect for the island as well as neighbouring St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, St Lucia, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda.
This means that Tropical Storm conditions are expected within the warning area within the next 12 hours.
Across the island there were early reports of residents feeling the effects of gusty winds associated with the storm.
While there were no serious reports of serious injury or loss of life, Wendy Alleyne of Cleavers Hill, St Joseph said she had lost a part of her roof.
In the central parish of St. Thomoas there were also reports that the strong winds had downed numerous trees.
The system, which is packing 60 mph winds and accompanied by rains.
Tomas, the nineteenth named storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season, formed earlier this evening southeast of the Windward Islands.
Late Friday, traffic back ups were reported at Warrens and other busy sections of the main ABC highway as residents frantically sought to beat the evening rush and to get home before the system bears down on the island tonight and tomorrow.
