The students of The Lodge School were given hours of advice about maintaining good health when the school held its World Home Economics Day at the St John campus yesterday.

Head of the Home Economics Department, Sonia St Hill, revealed that the International Federation for Home Economics usually celebrated a day of recognition every March 23 but the school held its activities yesterday morning to avoid a clash with another school event.

“We thought that for our Home Economics activity we would focus on two areas – childhood obesity, children eating correctly in terms of a healthy lifestyle, as well as our environment.”

St Hill noted the presentations were on issues which were currently affecting society “especially as it relates to non-communicable diseases, childhood obesity – which is very prevalent now – as well as our environmental concerns in terms of the schools, especially when we were having a number of schools closed because of various environmental issues”.

The event, which also saw students from Harrison College attending, comprised talks from a variety of resource people, including retired doctor Sir Henry Fraser who spoke about Childhood Obesity and Shanice Murray, a registered dietician who engaged the children about Consumerism and Purchasing for the Economic Climate.

This was the first time the school was commemorating the event and St Hill said she hoped it could be held again next year, finances allowing. (HLE)
