The Transport Board says relief is on the way for commuters.
Acting General Manager Felicia Sue responded to criticism in a press release today about the introduction of the Travel Smart card and availability of buses as commuters continued to cry out for long waits ahead of an increase in bus fares.
“We know that in some instances persons would have been experiencing long waits for buses and measures have been put in place to address this,” Sue said.
“We have implemented a rigorous preventative maintenance programme and this is expected to give us an increase in reliability as well as bus availability. Additionally, we have a number of buses currently undergoing repairs that will be rejoining the fleet in the coming weeks.”
Sue said the Travel Smart cards was an interim measure as they worked towards developing a cashless system
“The Board is currently exploring options as it relates to a cashless system that will see not only the introduction of reloadable metro cards but also allow for the use of smart phones,” she said.
Recently, the Transport Board reached an agreement that could see electric buses joining the current fleet as early as August.
From Monday, bus fares will increase from $2 to $3.50 as announced in this year’s budget by Prime Minister Mia Mottley. The Travel Smart cards will offer some savings to commuters who take multiple trips. (PR/SAT)
