BARBADOS’ CARIFTA ATHLETES ARE among the hundreds of passengers who are currently unable to leave the island today due to the airport’s closure.
And while hopeful of the situation soon changing, Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) operations manager Jason Inniss has confirmed that the situation is forecasted to remain until at least 6 p.m.
When asked about the ongoing strike of air traffic controllers and its effects, Inniss said, “Essentially that means that we don’t have any flights arriving or departing until their services are available”.
“I’m hoping [it reopens soon]. I can’t say, but I hope that they do get the matter resolved and they return to normalcy as soon as possible,” he added.
Meanwhile, head coach of the CARIFTA team Bryan Holder and team manager Maureen Dottin said members of Team Barbados are remaining calm and focused.
They said they had spoken to the team and they were in good spirits despite the delay.
Inniss said airport management was first notified about the ongoing situation at 7:30 this morning and had subsequently been in contact with the relevant airlines. (AD)
